Mass Communications

No other industry has a more profound effect on every day life than mass communications. We are constantly exposed to messages from either electronic or print media that in some way influence our decision making.

With converging technologies, it is important for a working professional to have a solid foundation in mass media, no matter which profession a person will choose to pursue.

At NEO we offer students the opportunity to be involved in electronic and print media from the moment they step on to campus. From TV-13 and KNEO Radio to The Norse Wind student newspaper, students can experience all aspects of entertainment and news media.  At NEO we firmly believe in the value of practical hands-on experience in addition to traditional classroom instruction to prepare students to enter the work force or continue their education at a four-year institution.

NEO-13 is a fully functional television station which broadcasts on channel 13 on the Miami cable system.  Students will learn all aspects of television production, from entertainment and news to working in front of the camera.  They will also have the opportunity to develop their own shows. NEO-13 is furnished with some of the latest in digital technology.  It offers students the opportunities to do air-shifts playing music, sports play-by-play, news, and other radio programs. All broadcast students may be members of Studio-13, a campus organization. Students are encouraged to enter Oklahoma Broadcast Education Association (OBEA) competitions.

The radio station is a new addition to the NEO campus. KNEO is a low-power station operating on 1590 AM. It covers the central part of the campus which includes the student dorms

Students will be able to do regular air shifts playing music, sports play-by-play, and producing other radio programs.

The Norse Wind is the weekly student newspaper.  The paper covers campus and community news. Students will be exposed to all aspects of the print news business such as writing and reporting, editing, page design and layout, and ad sales.

NEO Mass Communications faculty members have professional experience in their respective teaching specialties. Faculty serve as academic advisors and mentors to the students within the department. Classes have a small student/teacher ratio, enabling a more intimate learning experience. Students are encouraged to explore any of the various disciplines within the program and are afforded hands-on involvement from the very first day of classes. Immediate opportunities exist for students to gain practical experience without competing with upperclassmen and graduate students.
