Students in the Business Department have opportunities to participate in many different clubs & activities.
The accounting club is open to any student interested in the accounting profession. Monthly meetings are held with guest speakers from the profession. Students will also tour local businesses and learn how accounting is used in the business.
The NEO Investment Club is organized for the purpose of understanding investing in financial products. The club primarily focuses on stock market investing. The basics of fundamental and technical analysis are covered. The theories of Ben Graham, Warren Buffet, Peter Lynch and the CANSLIM methods are covered.
The club sponsors the NEO Investment Challenge – an online stock market simulation. Have you ever invested in the stock market? Maybe you’ve heard of someone who made a lot of money buying and selling stocks – or lost money the same way! During this activity, students will have some firsthand experience with a stock market simulation where everyone starts with the same amount of money. But where everyone finishes – well, that’s a story that hasn’t been written yet. The objective is to increase the value of your stock portfolio more than any other individual in the contest. Students start with $100,000 in the portfolio invested in the money market earning 1% annual interest; students are also charged a brokerage fee and margin interest of 4%. Students trade real stocks at real prices using the Virtual Stock Exchange – just like the real thing -except for the money. A cash scholarship is awarded to the top two finishers. The competition runs from the start of the fall semester until April 15th of the spring semester.
Oklahoma Governor’s Cup
The Oklahoma Governor’s Cup is a business plan competition between teams from colleges across the state. The Small Business Division is open to two-year colleges and four-year, non-research colleges and universities. NEO has participated in the Oklahoma Governor’s Cup Small Business Division since its inception in 2013, gaining a third place finish in each of the first two years. The team selects a business and develops a plan for that business including marketing and financial. Members present the plan to a team of investors somewhat like the Shark Tank television show. Members of the NEO Governor’s Cup team are selected by faculty based on their academic and leadership abilities.
