NEO will host a celebration of the arts on Friday, April 21, 2017. Beginning at 6 p.m. in the Calcagno Family Ballroom in the Student Union, Director Adam Compton will conduct the NEO Band Spring Concert. Following the performance, graduating NEO art students will open the Graduating Art Majors Exhibition in the Charles Banks Wilson Gallery of Kah-Ne Hall at 6:45 p.m. Closing the evening, Assistant Director of Agency Programs at the Oklahoma Arts Council Molly O’Connor will perform “Another Year Closer to Death: Poetry Performance by Emily Kzany.” The final event is co-sponsored by Chapters’ Book Store as part of the Annual National Poetry Month. All events are free and open to the public. Attendees will begin the evening with a variety of musical styles performed by the NEO band.

Performers will complement the March style of Amaparito Roca by Jaime Texidor with moving pieces by Jay Dawson, Todd Stalter, and Dmitri Shostakovich. There will also be a collection of ensemble performances. Graduating sophomores Estephany Cavello and Cortney Simmons will then present their artistic works during the Graduating Art Majors Exhibition. This annual exhibition gives student artists a chance to display their works in the company of some of Charles Banks Wilson’s masterpieces.

Finally, O’Connor will take on the persona of teen Goth poet Emily Kzany to present her dark and heart-wrenching poetry. This PG-13 one-woman show is a dark-humored journey that will included at Goth haiku contest and a Goth fashion contest, and the first twenty people to arrive will receive a free drink coupon to Chapters. The author of the audience’s favorite haiku and the winner of the fashion contest will each receive a special prize from Emily and a $25 gift card from Chapters. Following the performance, Kzany will be selling and signing copies of “Another Year Closer to Death.” To enter the Goth haiku contest, e-mail up to two haikus to emilykzany@gmail.com no later than Wednesday, April 19.
