Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College (NEO) will host its inaugural Day of Remembrance and Service in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, January 21, 2019. While NEO offices will remain open, classes will be cancelled. Instead of classes, students will be encouraged to participate in activities from documentaries to service projects throughout the day,
From 8 a.m. until noon, students, faculty, and staff will be able to participate in several community service opportunities through the LEAD Agency, Miami Seniors Center, Community Crisis Center, and other community members. These service opportunities are meant to encourage reflection on the ability to create positive change and improve everyone’s quality of life in our community.
From 1 p.m. until 5 p.m., NEO will host several documentaries in the Blue and Gold Lounge in the Carter Student Union on campus. Documentaries will highlight Dr. King and the Civil Rights Movement.
For the final event of the day, the Core Ensemble out of Tulsa will perform “Ain’t I a Woman” at 7 p.m. in the Fine Arts Auditorium. The Core Ensemble, formed in 1993, is a chamber music theatre group focused on celebrating diversity and pushing the boundaries of the chamber music theatre genre. The performance, “Ain’t I a Woman,” is inspired by a speech delivered by former slave Sojourner Truth at the Akron, Ohio Women’s Convention in 1851. The performance celebrates the lives of four African American women including Truth, civil rights worker Fannie Lou Hamer, folk artist Clementine Hunger, and novelist and anthropologist Zora Neale Hurston.
“I am excited to host the Core Ensemble and their presentation of “Ain’t I A Woman”,” said Amy Ishmael, vice president for student affairs. “This will be a great ending to a day full of remembrance and service in memory of Martin Luther King, Jr and helps our students celebrate diversity.”
