Officials at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College (NEO) announced Mr. John Lomax as this year’s Outstanding Retired Faculty member. Lomax will be formally honored during the Alumni Awards luncheon on Saturday, Oct. 13, at noon in the Calcagno Family Ballroom. All alumni and friends of the college are invited to attend. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children ages 12 and under, and may be purchased by contacting the NEO Development Foundation office at 918-540-6115. NEO’s “May the Norse Be with You” homecoming festivities will take place on Saturday, Oct. 13, 2018.

Lomax studied math and physics at NEO from 1963 to 1965 before he transferred to Northeastern State University, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in Math Education. After spending a year teaching high school math in Joplin, Missouri, Lomax joined the Navy at the height of the Vietnam War. Following his military service, Lomax joined the NEO faculty as a mathematics instructor and over the next three decades, Lomax had “millions and millions of great experiences.” While he formed lasting relationships with his colleagues, Lomax always kept the student first in his mind. He noted that his greatest memories were bringing underdog students into academic success.

When he was appointed to the position of Dean of the School of Agriculture and Natural Sciences, he implemented the same ‘student first’ philosophy. He also encouraged his faculty to adapt to the newest standards and best practices, an ability that is crucial in math and science.

Lomax and his wife, Sarah, have three grown children, all working in the science or math fields. He enjoys fly fishing, playing guitar, and photography. “It is an honor to recognize John Lomax as this year’s outstanding retired faculty member,” said Jennifer Walker, executive director of the NEO Development Foundation. “Mr. Lomax served NEO A&M College with great leadership and passion for his students. He was truly dedicated to the academic success of countless students throughout his career.” For more information, contact Jordan Adams at Jordan.m.adams@neo.edu.
